# TikTok Research API vs scraper API in 2026

> TikTok Research API is academic and gated. Display and Commercial APIs omit public comment crawl. A scraper API is the commercial path for public videos, comments, and hashtags.

TikTok's Research API is a real comments endpoint for approved academic researchers. Display, Login Kit, and Content Posting APIs are for connected users and partners. None of those is a commercial public crawl.

**Verdict:** For public TikTok videos, comments, replies, and hashtags in a product or agent, Socify is the fit: sync REST, one credit per successful page. Use Research API only if you are an eligible nonprofit researcher.

## Comparison table

| Surface | Who can use it | Public comments | Best for |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| [Research API](https://developers.tiktok.com/products/research-api/) | Approved academic researchers | Yes, if approved | Non commercial research |
| Display / Login Kit | Apps with TikTok login | No public crawl | Show a connected user profile |
| Content Posting / Commercial | Partners and advertisers | Not the job | Publish and ads, not competitor crawl |
| Socify scraper API | Any product with an API key | Comments plus replies | Public videos, hashtags, agents |

## Data fields

Every successful Socify lookup uses one envelope: ok, platform, resource, data, and meta (credits_charged and latency_ms). Product fields live in data. Research API comment objects are for approved researchers. Socify public TikTok fields:

- profile and video stats: plays, likes, comments, shares, caption, author
- comments: id, text, likes, created_at, author, cursor
- replies: parent comment id plus media_id
- hashtag and hashtag-videos for campaign tags

Display and Content Posting APIs do not document this public comment crawl. Do not mix Research field names into a product parser.

## Reliability

Socify publishes a 99.97% monthly uptime SLA for the API service (auth, routing, and response delivery). That is the Socify hop, not a promise that TikTok will always answer.

- Live health and historical uptime per endpoint are on the status page.
- Failed or unavailable lookups are not charged when Socify cannot complete the request.
- Research API uptime is TikTok’s academic program. A commercial scraper publishes /status and does not charge failed lookups.
- Retry 502 / 503 / 504 with backoff. Do not retry 400, 401, 402, or 404 with the same payload.

Actor marketplaces can look similar on a happy path and still bill compute on retries. Credit on success plus a public status page is the reliability model here.

## Rate limits

Socify does not enforce request per minute or concurrency caps on your account. Monthly credits are the only hard quota.

- Typical cost is 1 credit per successful lookup, documented per endpoint.
- A 402 with insufficient credits means the lookup did not run. Upgrade or wait for the monthly refill.
- Upstream platforms can still throttle. That surfaces as a 502 with a rate limited message, not a Socify RPM table, and is not billed as a success.
- Research max_count is 100 comments per page with institutional approval. Socify pages comments by credit, with no RPM cap on your key.

Official Graph style APIs still ship hourly token caps. Prepaid Instagram or TikTok APIs often hide the real limit in a minimum top up. Credits keep the meter in one place.

## Terms

This comparison is for commercial public TikTok reads. Research API terms still bind approved researchers. Socify returns publicly available data only. Private accounts, DMs, and gated media are out of scope.

- You are responsible for applicable law and for each platform’s terms of service. Socify does not grant rights in third party content beyond delivering the JSON response.
- Do not use the API for harassment, fraud, stalking, or unauthorized access to private data.
- Keep API keys server side. Sharing keys in public clients or repos can get them revoked.
- This page is not legal advice. Read the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy before you store or resell anything you fetch.

Owned account publishing, ads, and inbox work still belong on official partner APIs. A scraper API is for public reads you are allowed to request.
