Socify blog cover: Instagram Graph API vs scraper API in 2026

Use Meta's Instagram Graph API when your users connect professional accounts and you act on their behalf. Use a scraper API when you need public profiles, posts, Reels, or comments for accounts that never logged into your app. Those are different products that share a logo.

Verdict

For public Instagram data you do not own, Socify is the scraper path: one Bearer key, GET /api/v1/instagram/{resource}, no App Review. Keep Graph for publishing, Insights, and comment moderation on connected Business or Creator accounts.

What the Instagram Graph API is

The Graph API (Instagram API with Instagram Login or Facebook Login) is Meta's official surface for professional accounts. Your app sends the account owner through a login flow, requests permissions, and then reads or writes data for that account. Typical jobs:

  • Publish posts and Reels on behalf of the connected account
  • Read Insights (reach, impressions) that are not public
  • Moderate comments: hide, reply, delete on media you manage
  • Messaging, when those products are in scope

Business Discovery lets a connected professional account look up basic public stats on other professional accounts. It does not cover personal accounts, and it still sits behind your app, tokens, and review.

Meta retired the Basic Display API. There is no official personal-account read API for third-party products anymore. That is why public-data teams stopped waiting on Graph for competitor handles.

What a scraper API is

A scraper API reads what Instagram shows to a logged-out visitor and returns JSON. You send a username, shortcode, or URL. The provider handles fetch, retries, and parse. No Instagram session of yours, no Meta app. The limit is the public page: no Insights, no DMs, no private accounts, no publishing.

Socify is that job as sync REST. Fifteen Instagram resources, including profile, posts, post, comments, reels, hashtag, search, and related. Failed lookups are not charged.

Use Graph for owned professional accounts. Use a scraper API for public accounts you do not manage.

Can I scrape Instagram without the Graph API?

Yes, for public data. You still need a lawful basis, and you still follow Instagram's terms and privacy law. A scraper API is not a Graph permission bypass. It is a different dataset: the public page, not the owner dashboard.

If the question is “comments on a competitor Reel,” Graph will not do it. See how to get Instagram comments without Graph.

When to use both

Many products keep Graph for connected creators (publish, Insights) and a scraper API for everyone else (discovery, competitors, research). Do not force one vendor to pretend it is the other.

Minimal public lookup

curl -sS "https://trysocify.com/api/v1/instagram/profile?username=natgeo" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY"

Data fields

Every successful Socify lookup uses one envelope: ok, platform, resource, data, and meta (credits_charged and latency_ms). Product fields live in data. Graph field names are scoped to connected professional accounts. Socify public Instagram fields:

  • profile: id, username, name, bio, avatar, verified, private, followers, following, posts, website, category
  • posts / reels / post: caption, likes, comments, views, type, created_at, media URLs
  • comments: id, text, likes, created_at, author, cursor
  • Graph Insights, messaging, and publishing fields are not on this API

Do not map Graph permission names onto scraper JSON. The jobs share a brand, not a schema.

Reliability

Socify publishes a 99.97% monthly uptime SLA for the API service (auth, routing, and response delivery). That is the Socify hop, not a promise that Instagram will always answer.

  • Live health and historical uptime per endpoint are on the status page.
  • Failed or unavailable lookups are not charged when Socify cannot complete the request.
  • Graph reliability is Meta’s token and app review surface. A scraper API absorbs fingerprinting; you still handle 502s from upstream Instagram.
  • Retry 502 / 503 / 504 with backoff. Do not retry 400, 401, 402, or 404 with the same payload.

Actor marketplaces can look similar on a happy path and still bill compute on retries. Credit on success plus a public status page is the reliability model here.

Check live status and the error and retry docs before you page anyone.

Rate limits

Socify does not enforce request per minute or concurrency caps on your account. Monthly credits are the only hard quota.

  • Typical cost is 1 credit per successful lookup, documented per endpoint.
  • A 402 with insufficient credits means the lookup did not run. Upgrade or wait for the monthly refill.
  • Upstream platforms can still throttle. That surfaces as a 502 with a rate limited message, not a Socify RPM table, and is not billed as a success.
  • Graph sits around 200 calls per hour per user token for many permissions. Socify does not copy that cap. Monthly credits are the throttle.

Official Graph style APIs still ship hourly token caps. Prepaid Instagram or TikTok APIs often hide the real limit in a minimum top up. Credits keep the meter in one place.

Metering: credits. Packs: pricing.

Terms

This page is a method choice for public Instagram reads, not a license to ignore Meta’s terms on owned-account products. Socify returns publicly available data only. Private accounts, DMs, and gated media are out of scope.

  • You are responsible for applicable law and for each platform’s terms of service. Socify does not grant rights in third party content beyond delivering the JSON response.
  • Do not use the API for harassment, fraud, stalking, or unauthorized access to private data.
  • Keep API keys server side. Sharing keys in public clients or repos can get them revoked.
  • This page is not legal advice. Read the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy before you store or resell anything you fetch.

Owned account publishing, ads, and inbox work still belong on official partner APIs. A scraper API is for public reads you are allowed to request.

Bottom line

Graph API: owned professional accounts, after review. Scraper API: public Instagram JSON for products and agents. Socify is built for the second job, on purpose.
