How to get Instagram comments without the Graph API

Graph API comments only cover professional accounts you manage. For a public post or Reel URL, call a scraper comments API: curl, cursor pagination, and when Graph is still the right tool.

Socify guide cover: How to get Instagram comments without the Graph API

Graph API comments only work on media belonging to professional accounts that authorized your app. For a public post or Reel you do not manage, call a scraper comments API: API key, URL or shortcode, cursor. This guide is that path on Socify, plus when to stay on Graph.

Do this

Owned professional media, hide/reply/moderate: Graph API. Anyone else's public post or Reel: GET /api/v1/instagram/comments with code, id, or url. 1 credit per page. 100 free credits / month.

When Graph is still the right tool

If you need to hide a comment, reply as the brand, or attach webhooks to media you publish, stay on Graph. A scraper is read only. It will not moderate. Background: Graph API vs scraper API.

Make the first comments request

Prefer the canonical post or Reel URL, or the shortcode. Share redirects add a failure mode. Docs: comments endpoint.

curl -sS "https://trysocify.com/api/v1/instagram/comments?code=C-6WRvdS75Q" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY"

Equivalent: url=https://www.instagram.com/p/C-6WRvdS75Q/ or a Reel URL. Exactly one of code, id, or url.

Pagination

Read the cursor from the response. Send it back as cursor until it is missing or you hit a page budget. Dedup by comment id. Page sizes vary. Do not invent a token.

An empty comments array can mean no comments, comments switched off, or the end of the list. If the media itself is private, deleted, or missing, you get a failed lookup (not billed as a success). Fetch /instagram/post first if you need caption and counts before you spend credits on the thread.

What you get, and what you do not

  • Top-level public comments: text, author, likes, time
  • Not Graph moderation. Not DMs. Not private accounts.
  • Not a guarantee of every historical comment or every reply. Socify does not currently ship a separate Instagram comment-replies resource.

For TikTok threads that do include replies, see TikTok comment scrapers.

Data fields

Every successful Socify lookup uses one envelope: ok, platform, resource, data, and meta (credits_charged and latency_ms). Product fields live in data. GET /api/v1/instagram/comments takes exactly one of code, id, or url:

  • Prefer shortcode (code) or the canonical post / Reel URL
  • Each row: id, text, likes, created_at, author
  • Follow cursor until it disappears or you hit your budget
  • This is top-level public comments, not Graph moderation

An empty array can mean no comments, comments off, or a private/deleted post. Check /instagram/post first if you need media context.

Reliability

Socify publishes a 99.97% monthly uptime SLA for the API service (auth, routing, and response delivery). That is the Socify hop, not a promise that Instagram will always answer.

  • Live health and historical uptime per endpoint are on the status page.
  • Failed or unavailable lookups are not charged when Socify cannot complete the request.
  • Hidden and filtered comments will not appear. Do not treat a short page as proof Instagram is down.
  • Retry 502 / 503 / 504 with backoff. Do not retry 400, 401, 402, or 404 with the same payload.

Actor marketplaces can look similar on a happy path and still bill compute on retries. Credit on success plus a public status page is the reliability model here.

Check live status and the error and retry docs before you page anyone.

Rate limits

Socify does not enforce request per minute or concurrency caps on your account. Monthly credits are the only hard quota.

  • Typical cost is 1 credit per successful lookup, documented per endpoint.
  • A 402 with insufficient credits means the lookup did not run. Upgrade or wait for the monthly refill.
  • Upstream platforms can still throttle. That surfaces as a 502 with a rate limited message, not a Socify RPM table, and is not billed as a success.
  • Each comments page is 1 credit on success. Bound the loop. Do not retry 404 with the same shortcode.

Official Graph style APIs still ship hourly token caps. Prepaid Instagram or TikTok APIs often hide the real limit in a minimum top up. Credits keep the meter in one place.

Metering: credits. Packs: pricing.

Terms

This walkthrough is for public comment text. It does not post, hide, or reply. Graph still owns moderation on accounts you manage. Socify returns publicly available data only. Private accounts, DMs, and gated media are out of scope.

  • You are responsible for applicable law and for each platform’s terms of service. Socify does not grant rights in third party content beyond delivering the JSON response.
  • Do not use the API for harassment, fraud, stalking, or unauthorized access to private data.
  • Keep API keys server side. Sharing keys in public clients or repos can get them revoked.
  • This page is not legal advice. Read the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy before you store or resell anything you fetch.

Owned account publishing, ads, and inbox work still belong on official partner APIs. A scraper API is for public reads you are allowed to request.

Bottom line

Public Instagram comments without Graph: one REST call, a cursor, a budget. Socify is that call. Graph stays for the accounts you actually operate.
